Criminal classes in Victorian schools

HUNDREDS of teachers with serious criminal histories will run Victorian classrooms this year after an education watchdog declared them fit to teach.

Stalkers, thieves and drug abusers are among those who remain in the classroom.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching has publicly identified only 15 teachers known to have been convicted of serious crimes in the past.

But the Herald Sun has learned up to 400 more have been quietly allowed to keep teaching.

Last year alone, registration was granted to 119 applicant teachers who had committed indictable offences including theft, drug offences, stalking -- even assault."
