Cut him loose Tony

When I read this story, I knew there was something about Jack Straw that I remember posting about in the past. Had to dig around a bit but found it in the old archives.
Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary, is leading a growing Cabinet revolt against Tony Blair's handling of the Middle East crisis. Mr Straw heaped pressure on the Prime Minister by describing Israeli attacks on Lebanon as "disproportionate" and accusing Israel of escalating an already dangerous situation.

But Mr Blair, who is on a five-day visit to the United States, refused to utter any criticism of Israeli aggression and even rewrote a speech to make it clear that he pins the blame for the crisis solely on Hezbollah terrorists.

Mr Straw, demoted to Commons Leader by Mr Blair, sent out by far the strongest condemnation of Israel. In a statement to Muslim leaders in his Blackburn constituency this weekend, he said: "Disproportionate action only escalates an already dangerous situation.

"One of many serious concerns I have is that the continuation of such tactics by the Israelis could further destabilise the already fragile Lebanese nation."

He acknowledged the right of the Israelis to defend themselves against terrorists and expressed sympathy for Israeli victims of the conflict - but also for the "10 times as many" Lebanese civilians killed or injured.
I am wary of Straw’s supposed sympathy to the Israeli’s killed for he has, in the past, displayed a weakening of the back muscles when it comes to dealing with terrorist organisations. See below, back in April.
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni appealed to the 25 EU ambassadors in Israel on Thursday to stay firm in their stand against dealing with Hamas until the organization recognizes Israel, forswears terrorism and accepts previously signed agreements between Israel and the Palestinians.

Her comments came on the day The Daily Telegraph reported that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, on a visit to Riyadh, said that Britain wanted to have "normal relations" with Hamas and was looking for ways to unfreeze millions of pounds worth of aid to the Palestinians.
I don’t know how you can have “normal relations” with a terrorist organisation, committed to the destruction of Israel. Perhaps Straw still believes if he appeases enough they’ll leave him alone, or maybe he wanted to talk about the fact that they wanted to destroy...
The report, which followed by 10 days a Jerusalem Post story that Straw had begun to water down the Quartet's three conditions for legitimizing Hamas, said that Straw "appeared to be interpreting these conditions with great leniency."

"Hamas now leads the government and we would like to have normal relations with them as we have had with previous governments," he said in Riyadh. "This requires movement by them as well as by us."
Ultimately, there may have been movement by Jack Straw, but not a single movement by Hamas, best cut him loose Tony.
