So, Was It The Speedos?

By AR - Reportedly, Sydney's gays and lesbians are joining Surf Life Saving Clubs in record numbers after seeing some lifesavers in last year's Gay Mardi Gras. Now, I'm not sure how long they've been keeping records at SLSCs about sexual orientation but clubs east of the city including Bondi, North Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte are seeing increases in gay and lesbian members. The increase has been noted by "Lifesavers with Pride" spokesman Drew Lambert - "When I rejoined North Bondi a few years ago there were only a couple of gay guys in the club, now there are around 20 or 30".

Here I was thinking SLSCs were about surf carnivals and rescuing struggling swimmers, but no, the modern SLSC needs "to reflect the broader Australian community". OK, so the organisation ran a few programs in schools to get some ethnic minorities to join up. Fair enough, but what the hell has sexual orientation got to do with surf lifesaving?
