An Australian Defence Force Hercules carrying the bodies of nine Australians killed in a navy helicopter crash in Indonesia has landed at Sydney airport. An RAAF Hercules carrying the nine flag-draped coffins land at Sydney International Airport at approximately 3pm (AEST).

More than 200 family members, politicians and military dignitaries were gathered at the terminal for its arrival. On board were the bodies of the six navy and three RAAF workers who died when the Sea King chopper from the HMAS Kanimbla crashed on Saturday while attempting to deliver aid on the earthquake-hit island of Nias.

The families of those killed were joined by Prime Minister John Howard, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and other political dignitaries for the solemn occasion. Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, Attorney-General Philip Ruddock, Governor-General Michael Jeffery and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer were in place for the ceremonial guard.

Also present were Australia's military heads, Defence Force Chief General Peter Cosgrove, Navy Chief Rear Admiral Chris Ritchie, Air Force Chief Marshall Angus Houston and Army Chief Lieutenant General Peter Leahy are also present. An honour guard of 50 Navy and 50 RAAF personnel, 54 pall bearers from the Australian Federation Guard and 50 band members marched onto the tarmac to await the unloading of the coffins.

The ramp at the rear of the C-130 Hercules was lowered, exposing the nine aluminium caskets. Each was draped in an Australian flag and covered with a wreath of pink and white flowers. Family members and officials took their seats to await the unloading of the caskets. The mourners stood as the first of the nine coffins was carried off the aircraft by six military colleagues.

A defence board played The Song of Australia as each of the coffins was then unloaded off the plane. Each group of pallbearers marched slowly across red carpet in front of parents, partners, children, friends and officials towards waiting hearses. Family members hugged one another and wept as the coffins were laid on trolley near each of the vehicles.

The six navy personnel killed in the crash were pilot Paul Kimlin, Lieutenant Matthew Davey, a doctor, both from the ACT; Lieutenant Matthew Goodall, a helicopter observer, from NSW; Lieutenant Jonathan King, a pilot, from Queensland; Petty Officer Stephen Slattery, a medic, from NSW; and Leading Seaman Scott Bennett, an air crewman, from NSW.

The other three victims were Squadron Leader Paul McCarthy from Western Australia; Flight Lieutenant Lyn Rowbottom from Queensland; and Sergeant Wendy Jones from Queensland.

They have the gratitude of both Australia and Indonesia for making the ultimate sacrifice.
May they rest in peace.
