I'm not holding my breath

News.com.au - A 15-YEAR-OLD girl has become the first person in NSW to be charged under Skye's Law - which means jail for convicted criminals who lead police on car chases. ...The 15-year-old girl was arrested in Dubbo late last night after allegedly leading police on a 30-minute chase which stretched over more than 50km. ...The teenagers were allegedly laughing when they were caught by police.

News.com.au - A SECOND teenager has been charged under Skye's Law after allegedly leading police on a pursuit through Sydney's innerwest. The 19-year-old was on a motorcycle when he allegedly led police over a footbridge and through a park at Burwood about 5.30pm (AEDT)yesterday afternoon.

People think that these cretins will actually be jailed for a year or two if convicted because of Skye's law, I'll believe it when I see it folks, what the law actually says is they face up to 3 years jail, not they face a minimum 1 year or even 2 months. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

  1. One might get hit with a big sentence, MK. The bike rider sounds like a regular bloke... if dumb. He'll cop it because we're supposed to fear motorcycles now. The teen girls... from Dubbo... will have a get-out-of-jail-free racecard to play.

Meanwhile a bikie gets 16 years for cutting the ears off another bikie. Or at least he was a drug dealer.

Too bad he didn't just shake a baby - he'd be a free man.

  2. The way it works is the politicians enact some new legislation that looks tough on paper, and they puff out their chests on TV, talking about how they will come down hard on people who break the law, etc. The average non-thinking serf will accept that, and go back to watching Home and Away or scratching his arse, or probably both, and in time will forget all about it. Then, when someone actually breaks this new-fangled, get-tough, come-down-hard law, he or she will go before a spineless, snivelling cur of a magistrate, who will listen to the crap fed to him by the defense, about what a great person the offender is, what a bright future he or she has, and how those last fifteen convictions were all just a misunderstanding, out of character, blah, blah, blah, and the magistrate will give out a piss-weak excuse for a penalty.

Every now and again, a magistrate with a modicum of intelligence, backbone and integrity, will hand out a realistic sentence, and he is immediately howled down by the press, and the matter is appealed, going before some worthless Dickensian wet-dream of a judge, in his wood-panelled, leather upholstered ivory tower, and the sentence will be reduced on appeal to the same piss-weak "penalty" that the aforementioned snivelling cur of a magistrate would have given in the first place, and so it goes on....

Nothing will change. No-one will dop three years for this offence.
