and now for something a little lighter..sort of

He's a South African Boerboel. Great guard dogs.
And no, the girl in the pic isn't a small person by any means--she's a standard-size 20yo.

  1. I may not be an expert on the breed, but in my opionion, everything is wrong about this dog. It is actually really disappointing to see. I feel bad for the big guy...I bet he has some problems...:(

  2. no they actually dont. they are a well put together dog with minimum problems. this particular dog though is obviously abnormally big.

  3. all large breed dogs have enormous health problems, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal....in order to have such a thing as a purebred dog you have to inbreed which reduces heterozygosity and therefore genetic fitness and so results in genetic disorders and health problems

  4. My wolfhound / mastiff is 185 pounds he's six and he's fine he runs and plays. Big dogs have been around longer than old Rome

  5. I have what I thought might have been a bull mastiff but after watching an episode of Dog Whisperer I am beginning to think that he is a Boerboel. Early in the research but at 157 lbs he is a giant and does sit exactly like this guy with the straight back legs underneath the sit. My dog "Micah" has had TPLO surgery on both back legs - this one could have too. My 'mastiff' is a wonderful dog in every way and though we spend a bit more money in dog food that normal I can highly recommend the breed. Mine is 'walrus' like and loves to play, chase balls and oh yeah... snores like an old man..... gotta love em

  7. i agree with the last commen , neopoliten are the mastifs with the most problems. the Boerboel is an amazing breed and i plan to import my own within the next 4 years.
i currntly have a golden retrever, a bullmastiff, a french mastiff and 2 italion mastiff's ( cane corso) and i wouldnt change them for the world!! as long as you dont over exert them when they are young they shouldnt carry health problems bar the usual genetic problems with the breed e.g. french mastiff heart problems due to over feeding with alot of protine. but i must say to every one out there if youv chose a mastif youv made the write decition they are so loyal and such big softies its un real im more scared of a jack russle than a mastiff ha ha ha

  10. Boerboels are specifically known for not having health problems and require minimal vet care, yes he is abnormally large but boerboels don't get hip dispacia like many large breeds of dogs. They were bred to be large enough to guard camps in africa from lions and other threats and are by nature very territorial and protective and because of their origins they were required to be harty and healthy. They are great with children from my experiences

  11. If you can see from this picture the girl is a normal size but she is leaning further away from the camera shot. The boerboel however remains in line with her shoes. If you compare her feet size to the size of the boerboels you will notice that this is in fact a normal size for a Boerboel. They are large dogs weighing between 160-200 pound (this is muscle and not fat like some other mastiffs)
