Namely, the negative influence of politicians who are decoupled from reality on national wealth, personal freedom, etc. The cited paper focuses on items such as patents, Nobel prizes, etc., which could (at least for the hard sciences) be taken as proxies for intelligent people who are coupled to reality.<br /><br />One other potential objection to the paper has to do with the choice of items such as patents, which could be taken to bias the study toward those nations which enjoy some semblance of a rule of law.
