Will the Real Cause. . .

. . .of Australia’s housing affordability crisis, please stand up:

TENS of thousands of new homes will be built across Melbourne as the Brumby Government responds to a booming population and the housing affordability crisis by opening up new tracts of land. Premier John Brumby is expected to announce the move today after being told Victoria's population will rise to 6.2 million by 2020, 10 years earlier than forecast.
Yes indeed. Finally, we see the real culprits starting to fess up.

As I noted over at MrLefty’s site, in response to the usual ‘It’s all Howard’s fault’ thread (peppered with a liberal sprinkling of ‘baby-boomer blame’, for which I have my sympathies, I must admit):

‘The problem is basic: lack of supply. You have State Governments around the country with green-tinged glasses refusing to release land. That's why you confront high rents *and* high housing prices.’
I find this morning’s announcement extremely amusing, in a dry kind of way. And there'll be much more to come, now that The Ruddite requires the States to pull their heads in and finally come to the party if Federal Labor is to get anything done at all.

Grotesque to see Labor Governments (State and now Federal) so happy to so comprehensively screw with our lives in the name of party politics, though. Vile, actually. And typical of the ALP.

Get used to it. It's not as if it's an isolated incident.
