something evil this way comes...

2008--the year battle commences over blog censorship.
I'm old and cynical and in my lifetime I've seen governments and bureaucrats introduce restrictions on our freedoms which would have been unthinkable when I was a young man. Being derided as paranoid has become routine, yet almost everything I feared about this brave new world of ours has come to pass.
Not spectacularly, not in the form of any single great outrage but by degrees, by incremental nibbling at liberties which were made to sound entirely reasonable at the time.
But the distance between the freedoms of then and now is huge.
Europe is already a totalitarian superstate--the EUSSR. Americans are in much better shape, but a Clinton presidency and the retirement of just a couple of Supreme Court judges could change the landscape there radically. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, for example believes the Supreme Court should take into account international law and the decisions of European courts....and that's no less than a clear statement that she believes the Constitution to be a "flexible" document.
Liberties hang by a very slender thread indeed, yet few bloggers seem concerned, even fewer are making plans which will enable them to continue blogging regardless of what restrictions governments impose.
Time to wake up, folks.
