Labor--liars, shysters and hypocrites.

Howard indigenous body axed
KEVIN Rudd has chosen to kill off John Howard's hand-picked panel of indigenous advisers, despite members making a last-minute bid for a reprieve.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin yesterday thanked the National Indigenous Council and its 12 members for their contribution over the past four years but said their services were no longer needed.

The axing comes a day after the council's chairwoman, Sue Gordon, who is also head of the Northern Territory intervention taskforce, demanded the Rudd Government show leadership and commit to accelerating the takeover of federal indigenous communities amid fears the project would stall under Labor.

The council, which Mr Howard created to replace the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, had recently written to the new Government, urging it to beef up the body.

Labor has promised to create a national indigenous body made up of elected members, and yesterday Ms Macklin said she was committed to the policy.

But until that body is created and elected - which the Rudd Government privately admits could take its entire three-year term - indigenous people will have no official voice or representation.
