We knew it was coming

British troops have completed their pull out of their besieged base in central Basra. The move to the city's airport is the clearest sign yet that Gordon Brown is paving the way for a complete withdrawal from Iraq. The last 550 troops in Basra Palace had been surrounded by Shia militants in a scene likened to "cowboys and Indians". As of 4:30am this morning, all Britain's 5,500 troops in Iraq were consolidated in the sprawling base at the airport, itself under daily mortar attack. But the move produced an angry reaction in Washington. Bush administration officials were furious that the operation was launched at a time when the president is begging for more time for his 'surge' strategy to turn the tide of the war. Source.

MK - Iraq was pretty much all that Tony Blair got right, with regards to foreign policy. I had a feeling back when Gordon Brown took over that sooner or later, the British would surrender and walk away. The progressive elitists can call it a pull-out or a redeployment or a relocation, but when the enemy is at your gates strutting around and you walk away, it’s called surrender in the savage and wild world that is outside western civilisation. They set the stage during that Iran hostage fiasco. In a way I’m not unhappy, I’d rather have no friends than ones that come to help you and then leave you when you start depending on them. I suppose this ought to win some support for Gordon Brown at home from the leftists and the growing belligerent Muslim population, besides I believe the majority of Britons don’t really like America anymore, they have the EU and all that to look after them now. So, thanks for the help guys, so long and good luck.

Sincere thanks to the troops, they have done their duty and should make their country proud, I for one am grateful for their contribution, though I’m sure they wouldn’t have wanted to walk away from a fight. I wonder if Gordon Brown realizes, this has implications for their troops in Afghanistan too, even the Taliban have enough brains to figure out they just need to put a bit of pressure on the folks in downing street, to make em’ walk. In all honesty, I’d actually prefer it if they withdrew from Afghanistan as well, I don’t think they have what it takes. The soldiers will fight, I’m sure, but if the politicians and the people don’t have the balls or the heart to fight, keeping them there is only prolonging the inevitable. If they don’t pull out now but will in the future when the going gets tough, the enemy will only concentrate their attacks even more, killing soldiers unnecessarily and shoving them into a withdrawal, hand-over, redeployment, whatever you want to call it. Not to mention the ordinary Afghans who aid their soldiers, if they are planning an abandonment, it’s a betrayal to keep going if you have no intention of finishing the job or protecting those who help you.
