Going Green - time to cough up

Just going through the local paper this morning and thought I should share a bit of it with you. I remember a while ago the electricity company offered to give me ‘green’ power for one dollar extra, an offer I declined because I knew whether you went green earlier or later, it doesn’t matter, they’re still going to screw you over, nobody gets a break. The following is from the local paper.
Electricity bills will rise by up to $90 next year after the state government accepted the recommendations of the pricing watchdog. And further slugs are planned for two years after that, with heavy household users being charged between $1089 and $1247 by 2010, depending on their power company. The 20 percent price hikes take into account the energy provider’s requirements to source some of their electricity from more environmentally-friendly but expensive “green power”.
Now let’s see folks happily cough up, there are always folks writing in to whinge and whine about global warming and how someone should do something. Well, there you go, open the wallet and cough up. The next bit is a complaint from a reader over the rail fare increase coming into effect soon in NSW.
“The only benefit of being old is you can go around NSW for $2.50. But I can say I’m “absolutely outraged” for the people who have to pay the increase. They should have a congestion charge like they have in London. The traffic would flow more smoothly if they tax motorists instead of raising the charge for public transport users.”
Yeah, don’t worry about the government who promised not to raise charges before the election, just shaft those motorists instead, how dare those SOBs drive their cars, they must have done something nasty to be able to afford the hated motor vehicle, we’ll show them. Sorry, I don’t agree with this writer, instead of screwing us motorists over, you hold your politicians accountable, use your brain the next time you vote. Incidentally, public transport is subsidized, I don’t know the exact percentage the tax payer coughs up but you’re not paying the full fare for your train ticket. So consider that, before everyone starts shafting the poor motorist.
