Dicing with Death

IDF troops shot dead a 16-year-old Palestinian youth during operations in Hebron on Tuesday. The troops said that the boy appeared to be holding an M-16 rifle. After the shooting, the troops found that that the youth had been holding a plastic replica of an M-16. Source.

MK - From the side view it’s hard to tell which one is the replica, you try telling the difference when one’s being pointed at you and you have about a micro-second to react since you’re already operating in hostile territory. In all honesty, I can’t understand why Palestinian children are allowed to play with toy guns by their parents; it’s simply a recipe for tragedy. I remember a long time ago I got pulled over by a cop in the middle of the night in a country where life is cheap and cops don’t always come home, I made sure he saw my hands and moved very, very slowly. More recently when I was in the same country, we got lost and happened to drive past a bunch of them in a car, I flagged them down and again, slow movements and all that. Judging by their bullet-proof vests and the area we ended up in, the smart money was on them having safety ‘off’ when they stumbled upon us.

Coming back to the above incident, whilst it is regrettable that this teenager was killed and we wouldn’t want an innocent killed and I’m sure the soldier who shot the kid will be tearing himself up over it, it looks like the IDF have good reason to be cautious.

Some Palestinian parents in the Gaza Strip are up in arms over Hamas summer camps which are being used to train children on the use of weapons and other military equipment. The families on Tuesday also accused Hamas of inciting their children against Israel and Fatah. Some of the families decided to pull their children out of the camps after discovering the goals of the camp. Most of the children who are participating in the current Hamas summer camps are between the ages of eight and 17.

The Fatah-affiliated Palestine Press Agency reported that the Hamas camps had been established in closed areas in various parts of the Gaza Strip so that the families would not see what's happening inside them. The agency quoted eyewitnesses as saying that children were being taught how to fire automatic rifles and handle hand grenades. Source.

MK - For the sake of your children people, don’t give them replica weapons to point at soldiers already on edge and fearing for their lives.
