Never assume with the UN

I must have just arrived from the alternate universe, I just assumed when a military force is being deployed to an area to maintain the peace, they would actually use force if necessary. Not so in this new-age touchy-feely world that we live in, initially they are only authorized to break out picnic baskets with cupcakes, cookies and soft breads at the sign of hostilities. After many meetings, furious drawings on white boards and heated debates.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has been permitted to use force in order to prevent a potential renewal of clashes.

In a statement released on Tuesday by UNIFIL's spokesman, Alexander Ivanko, the newly expanded force's rules of engagement allow UN forces to "respond as required… should the situation present any risk of resumption of hostile activities."

"UNIFIL commanders have sufficient authority to act forcefully when confronted with hostile activity of any kind," Ivanko said. However, UNIFIL pinpointed the Lebanese army as the initial force to take action in such a situation. UNIFIL would only be required to intervene should Lebanon's force not fulfill this duty.

"In case specific information is available regarding movement of unauthorized weapons or equipment, the LAF will take required action. However, in situations where the LAF are not in a position to do so, UNIFIL will do everything necessary to fulfill its mandate in accordance with Security Council resolution 1701."
In case you were wondering what the LAF are permitted to do, they have an agreement with Hezbollah about displaying arms in public. So if the heat seeking, armor piercing, guided missiles are under the car seats, it’s ok, otherwise, it’s a big no-no, the naughty terrorists will have to be counseled.

It goes on a bit about protecting civilians and UN workers under certain scenarios, I hope the soldiers have a lawyer next to them to interpret every situation as it happens. It ends by saying.
The press release stressed that that the listed scenarios were only considered legitimate if they occurred in its (UNIFIL's) areas of deployment and within its capabilities."
In other words, if the UN soldiers are given water pistols, there goes the press release and Ivanko’s backbone. You can also thrash the tripe out of civilians and amass weapons outside their area of deployment.

In other, more promising news.
The army confirmed that IAF aircraft had bombed a vehicle carrying Islamic Jihad operatives in the Gaza town of Beit Hanun. After the initial explosion, several additional blasts were heard due to the number of weapons and explosives carried in the car.

The IDF said the terrorists were on their way to launch rockets at Israeli communities in the western Negev. According to Palestinian sources, two cars were hit in the strike. The five wounded were Fatah and Islamic Jihad operatives, they said.
I’m sure they’ll be back for more another day; hopefully they receive a similarly explosive welcome.
