Let's Talk Credibility

I had a chance to watch Prime Minister Martin on TV the other and I couldn't believe the stuff coming out of the man's mouth. He criticized the CPC platform numbers, which is fair game, but he claimed the document is not competent. He then made several references to credibility. Who is calling the kettle black?

The Liberals are mired in the worse crisis ever to strike their party. Not only have they engaged in a series of scandals, the RCMP has initiated 2 investigations well into the campaign. High ranking party officials, one after the other, shot their mouths off looking incredibly stupid in the process. A leading Grit strategist tried to intimidate a CTV journalist. Here in Winnipeg the other day Reg Alcock said during a debate that the E.I fund did not have a surplus. This is Martin's idea of credibility? Let's not forget the notwithstanding clause bombshell he dropped during the debate out of pure desperation. Want more credibility? As I've mentioned in the past here are some items the Prime Minister has held opposing views on:
  1. The Clarity Act
  2. Same-sex marriage
  3. The Iraq War
  4. Ballistic missile defense
  5. Free Trade
  6. The GST
  7. The Canada Health Act (ask Sheila Copps)
  8. Private medical clinics
  9. Minimum sentencing for criminals
  10. The use of the notwithstanding clause
More Liberal credibility as defined by Paul Martin. Then there's the little matter of why the Grits didn't step down after losing the first non-confidence vote especially after PMPM claimed he had respect for the institution of Parliament during his now infamous AdScam Address.

The Prime Minister then compared the CPC platform to documents he had seen in 1993. Would one of those documents be the Liberal Red Book? Remember the Red Book? Remember what Martin said about the Red Book?
"Screw the Red Book... Don't tell me what's in the Red Book. I wrote the goddamned thing. And I know that it's a lot of crap." -- Paul Martin criticizing those who dared to mention the Red Book after he readily abandoned the book of popular promises once the Liberals used it to win the 1993 election. (Source: Double Vision: The Inside Story of The Liberals in Power, by E. Greenspon & T. Wilson-Smith.)
More Liberal credibility. Why hasn't Ralph Goodale stepped aside for the time being? I'm not suggesting he is involved in any shenanigans. On the contrary. Everything I've read about the man tells me he is honest and sincere - all the more reason to temporarily step aside pending the outcome of the RCMP investigation. It's not as if there is no parliamentary precedent for such a thing. That would be the same Parliament Martin claims to have respect for.

He then has the nerve to claim the CPC will spend Canada into a deficit? Recall the last couple of weeks of November when the Liberals were trying desperately to cling to power. They announced a flurry of new spending including:
  1. $920 million over five years for Ontario immigration
  2. $46 million for Daimler-Chrysler
  3. $4.6 billion for new military transport aircraft
  4. $1 billion forestry plan
  5. $100-million for public transit
Yup. Liberal credibility. I especially love the way the Grits have turned Canada into one of the most heavily taxed nations in the western world, lowball their budget projections then claim our economy is healthy and vibrant having eliminated the deficit. I love Liberal credibility.

I realize Team Martin is desperate and panicking but talk of credibility is the one thing they should try most to avoid.
