Timing is Everything

Stephen Harper and Team Tory have scored a major coup and of course the Blogging Tories are all over it. Harper announced that a Conservative government would immediately cut the much-hated Goods and Services Tax from 7% to 6% and then down to 5% within 5 years. Aside from the obvious savings Canadians would enjoy since the GST is applied to virtually everything, the announcement is a shrewd political move because it puts Prime Minister Martin on the defensive.

Remember when the GST was first brought in? Remember how angrily Canadians reacted to its birth? It was a political firestorm. One of the major reasons the Liberals came to power was on the promise to scrap the GST. Paul Martin, as Finance Minister at the time under then PM Jean Chretien, co-authored the now infamous Liberal Red Book which among many other things promised to eliminate the tax. In fact, he said at that time,
"Mr. Speaker, the goods and services tax is a stupid, inept and incompetent tax." - Finance Minister Paul Martin, 28 November 1989
This is what he said today,
"I don't believe that is the path to follow ... Canadians have been down this road before. They've heard this story." - PM Paul Martin, 01 December 2005
Yes we have been down that road before. Isn't it amazing how things come full circle? Isn't it amazing how things have a way of coming back to bite you on the ass?

Come on Canadians! Stand up for Canada!
