The Conservatives announced a proposal to create "...an independent office of the Director of Public Prosecutions." What the plan entails is to create an independent body to investigate criminal misconduct by politicians rather than have politicians do it themselves. In a press release from the CPC website,
Today in Quebec City, Stephen Harper announced that a Conservative government will take decisions on prosecutions out of the hands of politicians by creating an independent office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The sponsorship scandal has demonstrated the Liberals' failure to hold themselves accountable. "Politicians should not be accountable to politicians and government should not be accountable to itself," said Mr. Harper during his speech.
Anyone recall Prime Minister Martin's promise of accountability? What does that have to do with the CPC's announcement you ask? I ask you where is the accountability in appointing the person or body that will investigate you? Don't forget, back in April 2004 Auditor General Sheila Fraser discovered that of the $3 million set aside for the RCMP's 125th anniversary celebration, $1.3 million found its way into the coffers of those now infamous ad firms. In turn, the Mounties tucked away the other $1.7-million in a non-government bank account. Not surprisingly, much of that paperwork was destroyed. Crown corporations, including the RCMP, were used to transfer money to the ad firms much of which was funneled back into the Liberal Party. Did the Mounties willingly participate or were they an unwitting accomplice? It's a fair question I think. At the very least, the creation of an independent prosecuting body will eliminate any perception of culpability or conflict of interest.

The CPC continues to offer substance while the Grits offer rhetoric.
